Social protection and social investment

Social protection and social investment are part and parcel of the social dimension of Europe. Expenditure on social protection is high in Europe compared with other world regions. On average it counts for two thirds of EU government expenditure.

BusinessEurope calls for reforms which ensure adequate and sustainable social protection. In view of demographic change and increased life expectancy, staying longer in employment and saving more for retirement is necessary not only for sustainability of pension systems but also adequacy of pensions for future generations. This requires reform of statutory pension systems, as well as raising employment rates to support a growing ageing population.
