Trade defence instruments

The European Union must ensure fair competition in the single market. This is fundamental for companies to continue to thrive and invest in Europe. The EU has at its disposal several tools to address market distortive practices, ranging from more traditional trade defence options, like anti-dumping and anti-subsidies, to newer tools like the Foreign Subsidies Regulation and the International Procurement Instrument.

These tools should be used when warranted and all the conditions are met, considering what is best for the EU’s economic interests and in close coordination with business. Furthermore, the use of such tools, and the development of any new ones, should be done in line with the EU’s multilateral commitments, and avoid undermining the rules-based international trading system.
