Reinvigorating the EU’s enlargement policy

We brought together policymakers, business representatives and think tank experts to explore how to make the EU’s enlargement process more effective for both the Union and candidate countries. As our Director General Markus J. Beyrer highlighted, “Enlargement policy can play an important stabilising role in a continent facing war and broader geopolitical challenges. Increasing the EU’s geopolitical clout starts in our neighborhood with a competitive economy and a good value proposition towards the candidate countries.” Insights from Gert Jan Koopman (European Commission) and Monika Sie Dhian Ho (Clingendael Institute) enriched the discussion on how a successfully enlarged EU can become a more competitive and reliable global partner.
