Quality Jobs Roadmap – a BusinessEurope policy orientation note

Social policyLabour markets reform agenda

Introduction

More than ever, Europe must attract investments and innovation by fostering a competitive business environment that retains companies and attracts new industries. Ensuring conditions that allow companies to create quality jobs in Europe is essential for the future of the European Union and its citizens. BusinessEurope’s perspective is that quality jobs are productive, sustainable and can meet changing demands to ensure competitiveness. BusinessEurope agrees that job quality is important to promote motivation and productivity. Job quality reflects many diverse realities as well as different workers’ and companies’ needs and perceptions. There is no one-size-fits-all solution to ensuring quality jobs. The approach should not be to seek to define an EU classification of “good” vs “bad” jobs. Furthermore, the approach taken must fully acknowledge the essential role of social partners in negotiating autonomously on working conditions in accordance with national industrial relations systems.
