Single Market Strategy: bigger, better, faster, more

On 30 September, BusinessEurope joined forces with DIGITALEUROPE, Eurochambres, EuroCommerce, the European Round Table for Industry (ERT) and SMEunited to host an event at the European Parliament on the new Single Market strategy, focussing on the business community’s reactions, outstanding needs and remaining challenges.

The event was co-hosted by MEPs Lídia Pereira and Laura Ballarín Cereza, and featured contributions from EU Competitiveness Council Chair Morten Bødskov (Denmark), Ministers Peter Burke (Ireland) and Giorgios Papanastasiou (Cyprus), and Kerstin Jorna, Director-General of DG GROW.

Our Director General Markus J. Beyrer stressed that while the Single Market Strategy is welcome, prioritised measures must be implemented swiftly, with clear mid- to long-term KPIs. “Member States must also fully commit to a long-term agenda to remove barriers and cut regulatory burdens”, he stated.

Beyrer also highlighted that fragmentation of the Single Market continues to generate excessive compliance costs for companies and that reducing regulatory burdens must go hand in hand with efforts to remove cross-border barriers.

Discussions also centred around translating Single Market ambitions into tangible impact, accelerating decision-making, and ensuring stronger enforcement. BusinessEurope supports the Danish Council Presidency’s ambition to advance the Single Market agenda and foster a more efficient legislative culture in the Council.
