1 year after the Draghi Report: what has been achieved, what has changed?
On 16 September, our President Fredrik Persson joined the European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Professor Mario Draghi, Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen and other high-level experts, to discuss the EU’s competitiveness a year after the Draghi Report.
“The Draghi Report is even more relevant today than a year ago”, Persson pointed out. He stressed that in an uncertain global environment, the EU must focus on what it can shape and control: removing barriers in the Single Market, reducing regulatory burden, accelerating permitting, addressing energy costs and ensuring an ambitious diversification agenda. While the Commission’s current omnibus proposals aim to reduce compliance costs by €8 billion, this represents only 5% of the €150 billion estimated by Eurostat as the current annual regulatory compliance burden for businesses.
Stronger and more decisive action is urgently needed to ease the burden on companies. “The Commission has an incredibly important role to play in proposing legislation that contributes to the resilience of European companies. But this is also a shared responsibility with the Member States in the Council and with the European Parliament”, he underlined.
BusinessEurope will be a reliable partner to work on concrete solutions - be it on bringing down regulatory burden and energy costs, reducing permitting times or removing the barriers on the Single Market.
