EU-Mexico trade agreement: How to seize its opportunities

On 24 June, we hosted a discussion bringing together policymakers, business leaders and trade experts to explore what the modernised EU-Mexico trade agreement means for European businesses and how it can support the EU’s trade diversification agenda.

The event came at a key moment, with the European Parliament expected to vote on the agreement in early July.

Opening the discussion, our Director General Markus J. Beyrer highlighted the strategic importance of strengthening ties with trusted partners in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

“In these changing global circumstances, we naturally turn to trusted partners such as Mexico. This agreement demonstrates that cooperation and trust can continue to create prosperity, even in times of uncertainty,” he said.

Speakers underlined that the modernised agreement goes well beyond its predecessor, strengthening cooperation across a range of areas while creating new opportunities for businesses on both sides. The event featured contributions from MEP Borja Giménez Larraz, Litzahaya Romero from the Mission of Mexico to the EU, and Paolo Garzotti from DG TRADE.

A panel discussion moderated by BusinessEurope Deputy Director General Luisa Santos brought together representatives from Gestamp, Michelin, DHL Group and the European Services Forum to share business perspectives on the opportunities offered by the agreement.
