Discussing Omnibus and the change of legislative culture

On 8 September, marking the post-summer rentrée, BusinessEurope co-organised a high-level discussion in the European Parliament in Strasbourg to explore how the EU can simplify its rules, strengthen the better regulation agenda, and ensure that all EU institutions take ownership of this crucial effort.

Better regulation and burden reduction

Co-hosted by MEP Lukas Mandl, the event featured Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity, as well as MEPs Anna-Maja Henriksson (Renew) and Marion Walsmann (EPP).

During the discussion, our Director General Markus J. Beyrer underlined the importance of keeping competitiveness at the heart of the EU’s legislative process. » The direction of travel taken by the Commission is right”, he said. “We strongly support the EU’s better regulation agenda, which is key to competitiveness and growth. At the same time, it is important to acknowledge that some past regulations created excessive burdens on companies.”

“We call for a clear regulatory burden reduction target, backed by a dedicated programme, firm deadlines, and a robust governance system”, he stressed. Earlier this year, BusinessEurope presented 68 concrete proposals to cut unnecessary regulatory burdens across a range of areas, including the circular economy, energy and climate, consumer policy, digitalisation, and financial reporting.

By working closely with the European Parliament, the Commission, and the Council, we aim to ensure that better regulation becomes a shared responsibility - one that fosters competitiveness, innovation, and sustainable growth across Europe.
