Debate at the EP highlights urgency of concluding EU-Mercosur agreement
On 23 September, BusinessEurope hosted a high-level event in the European Parliament, with the support of MEP Gabriel Mato, INTA Rapporteur for the EU-Mercosur agreement, to discuss the significance and timeliness of this landmark deal.
In his opening remarks, our Director General Markus J. Beyrer stressed: “The EU-Mercosur agreement is not just about trade; it is a strategic instrument to make the EU stronger, more competitive, and more connected in a world where Europe cannot afford to stand still.”
Industry leaders Stefan Borgas (RHI Magnesita) and Cecile Duprez-Naudy (Moët Hennessy) shared illustrative examples of how the agreement will create new opportunities for European companies and enhance competitiveness across sectors.
The discussion benefited from strong audience participation and featured two distinguished guests: Pedro Miguel da Costa e Silva, Brazilian Ambassador to the EU, and Paolo Garzotti, Head of Unit for relations with Latin America at the European Commission’s DG Trade.
The overarching message was clear: after 25 years in the making, now is the time to finalise the EU-Mercosur agreement to bolster Europe’s economic resilience and strengthen its global position.
