In view of demographic change and increased life expectancy, staying longer in employment and saving more for retirement is necessary not only for sustainability of pension systems but also adequacy of pensions for future generations. This requires reform of statutory pension systems, as well as raising employment rates to support a growing ageing population.

Given the increasing importance of occupational pensions in the future adequacy and sustainability of pension systems, employers must continue to be able to provide such schemes to their employees cost-effectively.
