Health and safety at work

Employers are committed to protecting workers’ health and safety at the workplace across the EU. Over the last years there have been positive trends in the area of health and safety at work: a reduction of 27.9% in accidents between 2007 and 2011 and 85% of workers expressing high levels of satisfaction with their health and safety at work. Good health and safety performance also helps ensure business continuity and competitiveness, avoiding high levels of absence and loss of skilled workers. But only if the administrative burdens and costs don’t outweigh the benefits.

BusinessEurope wants to see an approach at EU level which ensures that the objectives of worker protection are met in an effective, efficient and proportionate way. This is why we welcomed the focus of the EU Strategic Framework on Health and Safety at Work on better implementation, compliance and simplification of existing EU and national legislation in this field. This is also the way to ensure a level playing field across the EU.

We also support the exercise to evaluate the EU health and safety legislation. This isn’t about reducing protection, on the contrary, workers’ health and safety will only be protected if employers are able to implement the legislation. Once the results of the overall evaluation are available, a considered assessment of the actions included in the strategic framework may be appropriate, however the approach focused on better implementation of existing legislation should remain.
