Restricting free movement of workers is not the right answer to Europe’s employment problems

“BUSINESSEUROPE has noted the decision of the Swiss voters to control immigration. While fully respecting the democratic decision of the Swiss people, it is clear that this decision poses a serious risk for the integration of the Swiss economy into the Single Market. Free movement of people is a fundamental principle in the agreements governing the cooperation between Switzerland and the EU. Free movement of labour, capital, goods and services markets are necessary for a competitive and innovative Europe. Companies’ recruitment choices must be based on job seekers’ skills – not on administrative interventions. BUSINESSEUROPE is concerned about the potential impact that the future labour market regulation in Switzerland might have on business in Europe, Switzerland being the fourth most important trade partner of the EU.”
