Go for growth
In a major policy document presented on 4th February 2010, BUSINESSEUROPE and all its members propose an agenda for the European Union in 2010-2014.
Go for growth should be more than just a slogan. It should inspire every political decision.

Research and innovation

Innovation, the generation of new ideas and their transformation into economic value in the market, is at the heart of companies. It is the driver of economic development and a main contributor to competitiveness at the global level. It is also the answer to the great challenges European society faces such as climate change, energy security, ageing population.

Europe has excellent capacities for generating new ideas and inventions. Yet, it is still suffering from an innovation deficit. This means that it experiences difficulty in turning research results into marketable products effectively and rapidly.

The scale of challenges faced by the economy and society, the context of crisis and a fiercer competition at global level call for further efforts to support research and innovation, and secure the availability of skilled workers. Europe must adopt a resolutely offensive profile.

As a contribution to the future European Innovation Plan, this document lays the basis for a reinvigorated EU innovation strategy, based upon five top priorities:
  • Increase public and private investments in R&D and innovation;
  • Enhance the efficiency of public support policies;
  • Nurture future talent, by adapting education and training systems in response to new competence requirements;
  • Stimulate demand and markets for innovation, following the promising EU initiatives launched in the field of eco-innovation;
  • Integrate better the EU policies influencing innovation. Defining selected societal objectives can foster this integration.

BUSINESSEUROPE workshop on future EU research and innovation landscape
21 May 2010
With research and innovation riding high in the EU political agenda and many initiatives in the pipeline – for example, the forthcoming European innovation plan – the three-hour workshop on 21 May 2010 gave BUSINESSEUROPE’s members the opportunity to discuss three key issues with experts: international cooperation in science and technology, implementation of the knowledge triangle and simplification. Magnus Madfors, Director, R&D Policy, Ericsson, concluded the workshop by calling for improvements in five key fields: 1. cooperation among research areas and stakeholders; 2. time management of research and innovation programmes; 3. administration of research projects; 4. coordination and stability of financing; 5. increased risk-taking and trust in the whole innovation chain.
