The economic crisis has shown that Member States have social systems that protect workers in difficult times.
However, in order to safeguard the core of those systems, they need to be modernised.
This requires, amongst others, removing unemployment and inactivity traps, containing now-wage labour costs, reforming pension systems to encourage people to work longer and encouraging the development of private pension provision.
