Single market

BUSINESSEUROPE promotes and contributes for adoption of policies and instruments conducive to a stronger and better functioning single market with special attention to enforcement and removal of remaining and future barriers to its four freedoms of movement: goods, services, capital and persons.

Free movement of services
BUSINESSEUROPE promotes policies for the creation of a real single market for services of which economic public services are an important part. Europe is highly dependent on the services market which accounts for around 70% of EU GDP and employment.

BUSINESSEUROPE promotes policies that contribute to product development and transparent and fair cross-border trade, through the application of the principle of mutual recognition, the reinforcement of market surveillance structures and the development of market relevant standards.

Free movement of people/workers
The economic crisis has shown that Member States have social systems that protect workers in difficult times. However, in order to safeguard the core of those systems, they need to be modernised. This requires, amongst others, removing unemployment and inactivity traps, containing now-wage labour costs, reforming pension systems to encourage people to work longer and encouraging the development of private pension provision.
